SciDEAL Program Coordinator – National Science Policy Network

Title: SciDEAL program coordinator
Status: Part-time (20-30 hours per month)
Location: Remote

Position: The SciDEAL program coordinator will lead and run our Science Diplomacy Exchange and Learning (SciDEAL) program, which provides intensive training and professional development in science diplomacy for an annual cohort of early career scientists and engineers. Ideal start January/February 2022.

The mission of the National Science Policy Network is to engage early career STEM professionals in policy-making by fostering community, training the next generation of leaders, and empowering advocates for the role of science in society. National Science Policy Network is an independent operating project of the nonprofit umbrella organization, Multiplier, a nationally recognized nonprofit with a portfolio of innovative initiatives that conserve and protect a sustainable and resilient world.

SUMMARY:
The SciDEAL program helps NSPN meet our commitment to training, teaching, and empowering the next generation of science policy leaders by helping them to build experience in diplomacy, so that they can discover and pursue impactful careers and drive evidence-based governance. Program participants complete project-based fellowships within science diplomacy organizations, foreign embassies or consulates, and other global nonprofits.

The SciDEAL Coordinator will serve as the primary coordinator and convenor to ensure successful execution of all aspects of the SciDEAL program. The coordinator will work closely with other NSPN staff, selected SciDEAL participants and alumni, guest speakers, and selected host organizations to ensure that the dates, curricula, speakers, and other professional development events effectively further NSPN’s mission. They will coordinate meetings and logistics with these parties to ensure that all preparations are on schedule and relevant communication, training, and evaluation processes are timely. Planning, preparing for, and evaluating the program is a year-round process, however the work is likely to be busiest around the actual launch and wrap-up of the program, in March/April and December/January, respectively.

The SciDEAL Coordinator will have the opportunity to pursue their own professional development opportunities through NSPN, as well as meet and collaborate regularly with a small team of part-time program coordinators.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Oversee the SciDEAL participants’ experience as scholars go from being applicants to alumni. This entails coordinating the application process, facilitating orientation, preparing learning materials, and supporting matching SciDEAL participants with Host Offices. Working with support from the NSPN Program Director, you will:

  • Prepare and distribute an application for the SciDEAL program, in partnership
    with the communications and member engagement team
  • Assemble and oversee a committee to review applications for the SciDEAL program
  • Organize speakers, schedule, and assignments for the SciDEAL participants
  • Liaise with partner organizations to prepare position descriptions, identify mentors, and document expectations for SciDEAL participants
  • Plan and oversee SciDEAL placements process, matching SciDEAL participants with partner organizations, and
  • Document all training, project planning, mentorship, and other materials to support future iterations of the SciDEAL program.
  • Lead the collection of feedback and other program evaluations processes, with support and guidance from NSPN leadership.

  • Thoughtful, clear, and concise communication skills, whether communicating with NSPN colleagues or with diverse program participants and stakeholders.
  • High level of familiarity and comfort with Google apps, Slack, Zoom and other online collaboration and communication platforms.
  • Able to schedule and manage individual appointments via Zoom or other video conferencing platform.
  • Experience managing teams and coordination of training programs and/or virtual events is highly preferred.
  • Familiar with science diplomacy, and other policy-relevant writing formats (white papers, one pagers, policy briefs, etc.) is preferred
  • Experience as a mentor or other professional development role is preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience..

COMPENSATION:
Part-time at an hourly rate of $25/hr. Some benefits (retirement matching).

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS:
This position is remote and has no expectations for travel.
