Vice President

Position: Vice President
Location: Work from Home Office

Multiplier’s mission is to accelerate impact for initiatives focused on protecting and fostering a healthy, sustainable, resilient, and equitable world. Growing threats to our planet require holistic and creative solutions, both locally and globally. The projects in our portfolio span a broad array of cross-sector strategies in land and ocean conservation, public health, education and leadership, economic development, clean energy, climate resilience, sustainable food systems, energy efficiency, social and environmental equity, and more.   Learn more about us at www.multiplier.org.

With 2021 projected annual revenue of $30M+ and a growing and distributed workforce of ~200 employees, Multiplier is in full-on growth mode now and for the foreseeable future. To support this growth and to help drive innovative strategies to address some of the world’s most urgent challenges, we are adding two new VP-level leaders to our leadership team and are poised to hire immediately. Both positions will be filled by multi-faceted, entrepreneurial nonprofit leaders, each with a clear charter to expand and grow the reputation of Multiplier and our projects as thought leaders, groundbreakers, and innovators.  Multiplier’s administration team is comprised of core team members working from home offices throughout the U.S.

Rather than pre-crafting specific primary responsibilities for each role in advance, we intend to co-create these positions with our top candidates based on mutually reinforcing areas of expertise. Our specific needs are in the areas of (1) leadership and co-design of innovative funding and finance delivery models, mechanisms and programs; (2) strong senior-level stewardship of Multiplier’s internal operations, including co-designing streamlined processes to support our projects throughout their life cycles, and (3) leveraging data across both finance and operations to co-design and maximize our deployment of human capital, financial capital and technology to support mission-driven impact.

Finance Functions and Needs

At Multiplier, strong financial stewardship is built into our DNA.  Our accounting team is highly skilled at meeting the high-volume day-to-day revenue and expense-related demands of our core team and our employees, while our project finance team provides hands-on grants management, financial reporting, and cashflow management support to team leaders as they build and grow their work.  We seek a senior leader who brings high-level nonprofit financial acumen and innovative finance and investing experience to round out and build on the experience of our accounting and program finance teams. Our work is constantly evolving and highly collaborative.

Below are just a few examples of diverse areas where your expertise and leadership will be valuable:

  • Serving as a competent, creative, and active partner on Multiplier’s leadership team, bringing a forward-looking and proactive stance to managing and innovating across Multiplier’s finance and investment functions
  • Designing new hybrid philanthropic, investment and program strategies, including launching and tracking impact within a new partially forgivable pooled loan fund pilot to advance conservation efforts by supply chain actors
  • Staying immersed in the social impact investment and sustainable finance ecosystem to open doors to innovative capital and financing strategies to advance Multiplier’s mission
  • Staffing our Board Investment and Finance Committee, including working closely with the chair, committee members, and Multiplier’s investment advisors to oversee and expand Multiplier’s portfolio of mission-focused investments

Administration and Operations Functions and Needs

Multiplier is in the process of scaling up our technology and staffing to better meet the needs of a dynamic, growing and distributed multi-state organization. In just the past year, we have implemented new cloud-based database systems for grants management, procurement and contracting, and integrated payroll and benefits administration. These systems are in the hands of three team members with domain expertise and significant savvy in rolling out and managing these systems. We seek a visionary senior leader and manager who brings significant expertise in lean service delivery and quality assurance to round out our leadership team.  The leader will have the desire, drive and skill to lead the design and development of internal management and operations practices and procedures that will enable us to leverage data to predict and drive organizational decision-making and service outcomes. Change management experience will be key. Like the finance function (and almost everything else that happens at the leadership level), the day-to-day work slate will be varied (no boredom here, ever!). We expect that this leader will be highly matrixed across our leadership team – helping us build cross-functional systems and supports to fine-tune our core processes.

Below are just a few examples of diverse areas where your expertise and leadership will be valuable:

  • Creating and owning the oversight of lifecycle processes to ensure that our project teams can smoothly, efficiently and successfully transition into and out of Multiplier
  • Working across all areas of the core team (executive, finance, HR, grants, contracts, compliance, other accelerator services) to monitor and leverage data-driven dashboards to predict and drive solid business and planning outcomes
  • Designing a new organization-wide information hub to provide project teams with easy access to our current policies, procedures, accelerator templates, and other key resources that can help them drive impact
  • Driving and project-managing multiple initiatives that collaboratively advance our operational and administrative excellence, including maximizing access to and use of technology to accelerate mission-driven outcomes

MORE DETAILED BACKGROUND

Example of trends likely to be integral to our mission over the next several years:

  • Depth, breadth and complexity of our projects – Multiplier’s accelerator model is drawing increasingly complex and sophisticated project teams to our organization. Along with that complexity comes the need for staying on top of program and policy changes while also navigating the risks that come with these mission-enhancing opportunities.
  • Sector blur and hybrid organization structures – Multiplier teams work at the intersection of non-profit, for-profit, and governmental sectors. Although much of our program funding comes from philanthropic sources, we also leverage fee-for-service revenue, program related investments/loans, and governmental awards to drive our mission forward. Staying abreast of innovative funding and service delivery mechanisms and how these can be leveraged to drive change will be key.
  • Global equality and justice – Climate change and the COVID-19 pandemic have laid bare the current realities of increasing vulnerability in the face of natural disasters, health disparities, food and livelihood insecurity, and injustice. Whether working locally, regionally, nationally, or internationally, Multiplier is committed to modeling anti-racist and anti-oppression principles and practices within our work. We are deepening our work in this area and seek leaders to join us on this journey.

Beyond subject matter expertise in the specific areas of need, ideal candidates for these roles will likely be:

  • Servant Leaders with strong leadership, mentoring and coaching experience, and the desire to use these skills in service of supporting and elevating other leaders
  • Impact Driven with proven track records of designing and achieving impact-driven goals in a high-performing fast-paced, evolving organization
  • Nonprofit Experts with in-depth understanding of IRS compliance and other regulatory requirements for U.S. tax-exempt organizations
  • Highly Collaborative with a desire to drive impact across organizational teams and structures

Does this also sound like you?

  • You care about people, our planet, and our shared future and you want to work in an environment that inspires you and others to action every day.
  • You are a confident and skilled strategic communicator with finely tuned management skills and a natural ability to operate as a tactical as well as strategic thinker.
  • You are self-aware, perpetually curious, an energetic self-starter, skilled multi-tasker, creative problem solver and collaborative team player.
  • You have high emotional intelligence and a low drama factor.
  • You want to be a part of a cohesive and diverse team of co-workers that has a strong reputation for excellence.
