Celebrating World Ocean Day 2020

Today, on World Ocean Day 2020, Multiplier wants take time to celebrate the majesty and abundance of the world’s oceans.  We also recognize that oceans are increasingly being threatened and, in order to sustain ocean resources, we must continue to take steps to protect marine ecosystems.  Ocean conservation is foundational to Multiplier’s mission and, over the years, we have been fortunate to attract many impactful and interconnected projects that are providing the strong stewardship and solutions required ensure that oceans are sustainable for future generations. Today, we celebrate the work of those projects and encourage people who care about the oceans to educate themselves and engage in protecting the world’s oceans.

The oceans need a diverse set of stakeholders advocating for smart, inclusive policy that allows all people to enjoy and benefit from the ocean.  Azul is the only ocean conversation organization in the U.S focusing on engaging Latinx communities to advocate for common-sense approaches to protect and use the resources that the ocean provides.

Healthy oceans depend on healthy coral reefs.  In Curacao, the Marhaver Lab is studying ways to help endangered coral reproduce and thrive in a warming ocean.  This has resulted in breakthrough methods to crossbreed corals that would otherwise remain geographically isolated and boosting their resilience to warming oceans.

Ten percent of the world depends on some form of fishing for their livelihoods and billions more rely on seafood as their primary source of protein.  Multiplier’s portfolio of sustainable seafood projects is working to ensure that fishing will provide sustainable incomes and sustenance long into the future.  The projects include:

The Conservation Alliance for Seafood Solutions – a collective of cross-sector partnerships working across the globe to ensure that seafood production is sustainable and equitable.

SeaPact – a pre-competitive of alliance of leading North American seafood companies dedicated to driving stewardship and continuous improvement of social, economic, and environmental responsibility throughout the global seafood chain.

The Certifications and Rating Collaborative – unites five global seafood certification and ratings programs to coordinate and create a clear path toward environmental sustainability and social responsibility of fisheries.

Conservation and Community Investment Forum  – creates increased demand for fish caught through sustainable practices by providing expertise in community development and the financial solutions that will catalyze fishery reform.

Catch Together – helps fishing communities to pool their resources into community-based permit banks that emphasize sustainable fishing practices and allow local fishing business to be competitive with more highly resourced global seafood players.

Intertidal Agency – brings tech to sustainable fishing by providing tools and resources to better collect, access and analyze critical fishery data so that stakeholders can make smart decisions for the long-term stewardship of our oceans.

MarViva Foundation – primarily working in Costa Rica, Panama and Colombia, Marviva leverages the knowledge of a group of multidisciplinary experts to advance marine spatial planning, create market-based incentives for conservation and continue to promote the sustainable development fisheries.

Net Gains Alliance – facilitates the development, implementation and adaptation of robust information management systems that will modernize the current, outdated systems used to manage our ocean resources and fisheries.
