Climate.us

The challenge:
NOAA’s Climate.gov, the nation’s premier climate science communication platform, was decommissioned in June 2025 after 15 years of service. Its loss leaves a critical gap in the public’s access to trusted, science-based climate information, educational resources, data visualizations and tools. At a time when politics threatens the integrity of climate information, educators, communities, and decision-makers urgently need reliable resources to inform action, strengthen resilience, and cut emissions.

What can be done:
The demand for independent, science-driven climate literacy tools has never been greater. Protecting Climate.gov’s archived public-facing content, while creating an updated, modern platform, will ensure that data and insights remain accessible to everyone. By combining open access to federal climate resources with new interactive learning hubs, partnerships, and community engagement, we can rebuild trust in science and support systemic solutions to the climate crisis.

How Climate.us is meeting the challenge:
Climate.us is the nonprofit successor to Climate.gov. Led by former members of the Climate.gov team, Climate.us is building a world-class digital public resource to advance climate literacy and empower action at every level. The project is committed to inclusive communication, culturally relevant content, and equitable access for frontline communities most impacted by climate change.

Climate.us will focus on:

  • Securing legacy Climate.gov content for permanent public access.
  • Republishing the website of the Fifth National Climate Assessment, the nation’s most authoritative summary of the research on how climate change is affecting the U.S.
  • Launching a modern platform with real-time dashboards, interactive maps, and accessible learning tools.
  • Building community engagement, including educational resources, blogs, and interactive explainers.
  • Expanding partnerships with nonprofits, educators, libraries, local governments, and global science networks to strengthen reach and integrity.

This project aligns with the following Sustainable Development Goals

  • Quality education
  • Sustainable cities and communities
  • Climate action
